Author: Bhaichand Patel (ed)

Publisher: Penguin

Price: Rs 599

The book rightly begins with KL Saigal and Devika Rani and wrongly ends up with Kajol and Kareena Kapoor. And, it doesn’t have Nutan, Rekha, Sridevi and Dharmendra in the list, says Utpal Kumar

An edited text is mostly a book written in a hurry. An author — eager to get a book published under his name — arranges for a few writers to contribute articles. And the book is ready within months, if not days. Such books lack focus, and the quality of writing goes up and down with each article. Even if you ignore the ordinary write-ups, the truly good ones too fail to break much ice due to lack of space and words; by the time the writer actually warms up, he is told to wrap up the piece!

Bollywood’s Top 20: Superstars of Indian Cinema, edited by Bhaichand Patel, is no different, though you won’t get a better set of writers — from Meghnad Desai and Madhu Jain to Nasreen Munni Kabir, Jerry Pinto and Bhawana Somaaya — to tell the history of Bollywood and its protagonists. The book rightly begins with KL Saigal and Devika Rani and wrongly ends up with Kajol and Kareena Kapoor. The inclusion of the last two, along with Hrithik Roshan, disappoints one the most, particularly when one doesn’t find Nutan, Rekha, Sridevi and Dharmendra in the list.

It’s not that the editor doesn’t know he is stirring up the hornet’s nest by including the three at the cost of other worthies. He justifies: “The reader may well ask why Kareena Kapoor found her way among the twenty and not, say, Nutan or Vyjayanthimala. Let me explain. Kareena’s competition was neither Nutan nor Vyjayanthimala. Her competition was Katrina Kaif, Priyanka Chopra and Imran Khan. She is the most successful of the current crop. Nutan and Vyjayanthimala’s competitors were elsewhere, several decades ago.” But aren’t we selecting the top 20 of Bollywood? Will we leave Rahul Dravid from the list of 20 best cricketers just because there is one Sachin Tendulkar playing with him? The best doesn’t necessarily have to be from every era.

The book begins with Vikram Sampath’s eloquent portrayal of a young, lanky Kundan aka KL Saigal who spent “eight long wanderlust years” before finding music director RC Boral in Calcutta in 1931. Boral took him to Birendra Nath Sircar, founder of New Theatres, who signed “a five-year contract with him on a monthly salary of Rs 200”. Sampath showcases his rise, his simplicity (whenever people praised Saigal for his singing, he would say: “I haven’t killed a tiger. I was just singing”), and how the producers of Bombay, wherein Saigal had to migrate once Calcutta ceased to be the city of films in the early 1940s, “seemed to throttle the great artiste and squeeze the soul out of his throat”.

Cary Rajinder Sawhney carries the momentum forward with Devika Rani, whose life had been more theatrical than a Hindi film story — she married a much older man, ran away with a lover from the sets of a film and after the death of her first husband remarried a Russian painter to leave the glamorous filmi world forever.

Likewise, one finds interesting nuggets from the writings of other contributors, particularly Bhaichand Patel (Ashok Kumar), who has done a better job as writer than editor, Theodore Bhaskaran (Nargis), Pavan K Varma (Meena Kumari), Jerry Pinto (Waheeda Rehman) and Avijit Ghosh (Rajesh Khanna).

Shefalee Vasudev, Madhu Jain and Urmila Lanba, however, are the best. Vasudev demystifies Madhuri Dixit both as an actor as well as a woman, telling us quite convincingly that she has always been a polite but politically-correct person with no strong opinion on any issue. Jain and Lanba, on the other hand, have the benefit of covering the two most charismatic personalities — Dev Anand and Madhubala respectively. Though Jain has hardly anything new to add, especially after Dev Anand’s tell-all autobiography a few years ago, she seems to have dealt well with the actor’s chemistry with his two talented brothers. As for Lanba, she is sincere in depicting Madhubala’s conflicted relationships with her father on the one hand and Dilip Kumar on the other — and how she stood

by the former when she had to choose between the two. Lanba, however, falters in blaming Kishore Kumar for ignoring Madhubala during her illness. Dilip Kumar no doubt is the hero of the story, but Kishore Kumar doesn’t have to be the villain either.

The articles on Shah Rukh Khan, Aamir Khan, Kajol, Hrithik Roshan and Kareena Kapoor are good but predictable. We know so much about them — and we continue to hear so much on a regular basis — that there’s hardly anything new one can know about them. And, there’s hardly any desire to know them as well.

The two writers who disappoint the most are Meghnad Desai (Raj Kapoor) and Sidharth Bhatia (Amitabh Bachchan). If you have read Kishwar Desai’s Darlingji, dealing with the love story of Nargis and Sunil Dutt, you already know Raj Kapoor’s possessiveness and insecurities — how he stopped Nargis from doing movies with Dilip Kumar and Mehboob Khan, and how from being the lead actress in Barsaat and Andaz, she was marginalised with a cameo in Jaagte Raho. As for Bhatia, he tells nothing new about Amitabh.

And, yes, there’s Bhawana Somaaya who has written an engaging piece on Hema Malini, effectively bringing out her trials and tribulations till she became the “dream girl” of Hindi cinema. Somaaya, however, doesn’t regard Sholay to be one of Hema’s five best films, which is ironical given her stupendous Basanti act in the movie. Also, she errs in putting Amitabh and Jaya Bachchan in the star cast of Seeta Aur Geeta.

The book is a good read and would be liked by lay readers. But serious ones will have to wait for some more time.

Neighbours is a long running Australia soapie also airing in the UK...Its exciting bcos FINALLY they are introducing an Indian family into the mix to add more cultural diversity!

The Indians - Known as the Kapoor family as one Melbourne born Indian man as the father...a UK born Sri lankan woman as the mother and a Indo chinese girl as their daughter Rani.

More diversity as Indian family joins Neighbours

Long-running soap Neighbours will add a family with Indian and Sri Lankan heritage in one of the final moves by outgoing Producer Susan Bower.

The Kapoors are the first family to join the series since the Williams family arrived two years ago.

Local Councillor Ajay Kapoor (Sachin Joab) has been a regular guest since July, joined by wife Priya Kapoor (Menik Gooneratne) as principal of Erinsborough High in September.

In February their daughter Rani, played by newcomer Coco-Jacinta Cherin, will join them.

The ELEVEN soap has frequently been criticised for haveing too many Anglo-Saxon characters, but has previously had an Asian family before, if rather short-lived. Recently it added its first openly-gay male youth.

“I’m delighted by how the Kapoors have been introduced,” said Bower. “Viewers already know them because of their role in the community and link with other characters, and their cultural background is secondary.

“We have had many individual characters who have been representative of Australia’s diverse cultural landscape, however to have a family of Indian and Sri Lankan heritage join the neighbourhood, is very exciting.”

The Kapoors don’t get to live on Ramsay Street itself, appearing as part of the show’s extended Neighbours-hood, but it’s a positive step.

Hey baby...

Pregnancy has never been a joyride. But our star moms chose to make baby bumps look glamorous and motherhood feel like the ‘in-thing’. Filmfare walks you through their fashion fundas...

They walk the red carpet, they lead the jet setting lifestyle. Breakfast at Tiffanys and dinner in the Bahamas. And then, one day, give it all up for that rock on the finger. It isn’t easy making the transition. And then comes along a baby. Suddenly life is all about feed time, booster shots and sleepless nights. But our divas smile through it all. They change diapers with the same felicity they spout dialogue. And through it all their sartorial tastes remain impeccable. We take a look at the mommies whose fashion quotient has sizzled through and through…

Aishwarya Rai Bachchan
All hell broke loose with one tweet from paa-in-law. News of Aishwarya Rai Bachchan’s pregnancy was a stunner. Ash was more or less home bound after that. So what if we saw so little of her? She was the cynosure of all eyes sticking by her favourite Indian ensembles. Whenever she made public appearances she gave the saree a royal ditch opting for the salwar kameez instead. Close to delivery date, water retention seemed to be a major problem. But kudos for fabulously tackling unwanted media attention with such vigour!
Famous for: Indian silhouettes, Abu Jani and Sandeep Khosla creations post marriage and easy to wear fits.

Karisma Kapoor
Her peaches and cream complexion, her blue eyes, her supreme sartorial tastes made her a style diva like none other. Marriage didn’t stymie her. And pregnancy underlined her beauty even more. Today her marriage may have run into rough waters, Samaira and Kiaan may be a handful but nothing ruffles this yummy mummy. She may not wear mini skirts anymore but her taste will always remain chic.
Famous for: Being immacutely dressed at all times, lovely heel collection and well-fitted ensembles.

Kajol
Her simplicity is what stands out at all times. The fact that she remains grounded despite her heavy duty stardom only accentuates her appeal. Yes, she did pile on the kilos during her pregnancy but she didn’t let the excess fat get the worst of her. She quickly shed the weight. Much before she was a mother of two, she dressed just to please herself. Nothing changes even today. And that’s what is so invigorating about her; a star minus the frills.
Famous for: Her semi-precious stone arm-band and messy hairdos.

Gauri Khan
Her lean figure is the stuff designer dreams are made of. Her style is quintessentially classic. But it was not always so. Her middle-class upbringing was apparent in the way she dressed earlier. Being Shah Rukh Khan’s wife is not an easy job. But Gauri Khan has excelled at it. Over the years, she’s learnt her fashion and brands really well. Today, she’s as comfortable walking the ramp as she’s walking her kids to school.
Famous for: Pulling back her hair into a bun for that clean look.

Lara Dutta
She was the coolest and boldest of them all when it came to her sartorial tastes during pregnancy. Bandage skirts, body-fitted dresses and stiletto heels were Lara Dutta’s mantra. She proudly flaunted that adorable baby bump with such delight. She may have worked too damn hard for that perfect skinny figure in Don 2, but Lara strutted around with absolutely no qualms whatsoever when expecting her first child. We can totally see her as the hands-on mom.
Famous for: Daring statements, body-hugging silhouettes and high heels.

Raveena Tandon
She was always a sizzler. And though she had to constantly watch her weight, her oomph was never in doubt. She did put on weight during her pregnancies. But a combination of intense workouts and a sensible diet took care of that. Today the mother of two, Raveena Tandon looks steamy hot in dresses, trousers and gowns. She has shown that you can fight all odds and emerge a winner on the style-o meter.
Famous for: Over-sized chandeliers, Kolhapuri sandals and thanks to her for reviving the loop earrings; this fad has not faded to date.

Sushmita Sen
She is everything an Indian actress usually wouldn’t be. Her confidence is her fashion statement. Sushmita Sen truly marches to her own tune. When other actresses were running around trees on screen, she was making the rounds of adoption centres to adopt a baby. Not once but twice. She made single motherhood cool. And when it comes to style, this diva is less than none. She made a statement when she walked the ramp with daughter Renee. Yes, she did let herself go and put on loads of weight but her innate confidence saw her through the phase. The media bickered but she cared less. Her slim self is back. And all’s well with the world.
Famous for: Her solid rock and intricate bouffants.

Sussanne Roshan
Sussanne Roshan is no stranger to showbiz. Coming from a film family, she knows her fashion only too well. Even when she was just Mrs Hrithik Roshan, she could stun with her style. Pregnancy gave her a baby bump that couldn’t look more cute on her. Mother of two, she may be but that hasn’t dimmed her charm one bit.
Famous for: Designer labels, classy statements and the perfect 10 look.

Twinkle Khanna
You could debate her interest in the movies but never her sexiness. Even when she turned her attention to candle-making, marriage and motherhood, her interest in herself never waned. Her clothes, her make-up, her accessories would make any fashionista proud of her. What’s more, she even upgraded hubby Akshay Kumar’s style statements. As a mother of one, she’s only grown more comfortable in her skin.
Famous for: Interesting jewellery and clutches.

Juhi Chawla
She looks like a fun mother to have around. The one who plays with her kids (Jhanvi and Arjun) for hours and even lets them mess up the house. She may not pass muster on the high fashion front but what the heck! It’s her impishness, her sense of humour and playfulness that sets her apart from the rest. Her kurtis, jeans and salwar kameez are appealing in their own way.
Famous for: Kurta and denim combos.

Konkona Sen Sharma
She was always more about talent and less about fashion. More substance, less style. She didn’t set any fashion trends for pregnant mothers. Konkona Sen Sharma is all about white kurtas and salwars or casual jeans and t-shirt. Her pregnancy was no different. It’s her baby Haroon that’s the centre of her universe. She likes it that way. So do we.
Famous for: Casual outfits.

Malaika Arora Khan
Veejay, item numbers, model, item numbers, marriage, item numbers, baby, item numbers... That’s Malaika Arora Khan for you. She’s as comfortable with her motherhood as she is prancing in front of camera. Even during pregnancy she remained focused about being fit. And now she wears her stretch-marks like a fashion statement. Whether she means dresses or gowns, there's one aspect of the look she always accentuates. She isn't scared to flaunt her plunging necklines or her short hemlines and makes the most of every opportunity she gets to flaunt her bare back.
Famous for: Gowns with a slit, plunging necklines, bare neck, exquisite ornaments, itsy-bitsy dresses, backless body-hugging ensembles... the list is endless!

Sonali Bendre
Sonali Bendre was known for her svelte figure. Even today after one kid, you can’t fault her on that. She’s someone who can run with the hares and hunt with the hounds. So when she’s with the kids, it’s t-shirts and jeans and when she steps out for an occasion, she can spin around her look with gowns and classy hairdos.
Famous for: The 'girl-next-door-gets-funky' look.

Amrita Arora
Like her elder sister, Malaika Arora Khan, Amrita too lent herself to her pregnancy. She was all gloss and shimmer during those nine months. Showing that pregnancy needn’t be about fat, swollen ankles and water retention. It can be about designer maternity gowns, radiant skin and permed hair too.
Famous for: Teenager style statements.

Neil Nitin Mukesh: “I'm a Romeo at heart”

His home in SOBO has a tasteful old world feel. The family’s heirloom being music, there’s a lilt in the aesthetics and décor. While I look at Neil Nitin Mukesh’s childhood pictures framed all over, he walks in dressed in casual tees and pyjamas. His disarming casualness is refreshing. “Considering that I come from a family of singers, it has been a tough journey for me, constantly having to prove myself as an actor. I’m not jumping on a trampoline nor am I trying to reach the top. I’m climbing up the ladder slow and steady. There’s a lot of weight on my shoulders, mind you. And my family knows that. I’m trying hard to keep the family name alive,” says the grandson of legendary singer Mukesh. “The journey has just begun. I’ve been just three years in the industry and around eight to nine films old. So it’s not bad.”

He is in no hurry to sign anything that comes his way. “There are some slapstick films being made today in the name of big movies. They are senseless. I don’t understand that cinema. It doesn’t appeal to me. I am trying to hold my ground. I am the only young actor who has worked with seven national award-winning directors. Whether it’s Sudhir Mishra, Pradeep Sarkar, Kabir Khan, Vishal Bhardwaj or Madhur Bhandarkar, they are all different kinds of filmmakers. I’m proud of the films I’ve done. Acting wise, I’ve learnt a lot from Johnny Gadar.”
Neil is a master of many arts. Being a commercial arts student, he does portraits too. He is also an avid photographer and shoots portfolios. Besides that he composes music and is a pianist. His room has the latest gadgets, keyboards and sound systems lined up. He has even composed and written six songs for a film titled Paaydar. He goes to the extent of calling himself a ‘photoshop champ’! And he manages the time for all this despite his busy schedules. “In the middle of a shot if you have an hour’s break what do you do? Rather than gossip, you can do some creative stuff in your van. I help friends and newcomers with their portfolios,” he says.
As for matters of hearth, he says, “Family life is good. My brother Naman has started working as an assistant director with Abbas Mastan on Race 2. My sister Neha is married in Kanpur and well settled with her two boys. And I’m still waiting for stupid Cupid,” he laughs.

Talk about the matters of heart then. The grapevine insists that he’s back with ‘good friend’ Asin. He refutes the rumour using the ‘we’re friends’ cliche. Says he, “She’s dearest to me. I’m close to her family too. I respect her, I respect her family. I want her to have the dignity and respect of being called my dearest friend in the industry.” Ask him outright if he was dating her and he counter questions, “Were we? Today if you and I go to a restaurant and talk about work, are we supposed to be dating? What world are we living in? That’s what makes it uncomfortable to go out with anyone. Whenever I am in a relationship, I'll let you all know about it. I’d love to tell you about it but yeh Cupid kamina kuch kar hi nahin raha na,” he chuckles.

It’s hard to believe that the young bachelor hasn’t come across the right girl. “I am preoccupied with work right now. When it has to happen it will. You can’t really go looking for it with binoculars. I’m a Romeo at heart. I am waiting for my Juliet.” He doesn’t deny having suffered heartbreaks in the past. “Everyone goes through it. It’s a part of growing up. You learn from it.” He confides it’s his family which helps him beat the lows. “The best way to mend a broken heart is by receiving a lot of love and who better than your family to give you that? My parents know everything about me. Everything! I never hide anything from them.”

Saturday, February 11, 2012

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Whitney Houston, who reigned as pop music’s queen until her majestic voice and regal image were ravaged by drug use, has died. She was 48.

Publicist Kristen Foster said today that the singer had died, but the cause and the location of her death were unclear.

At her peak in the 1980s and 1990s, Houston was the golden girl of the music industry and one of the world’s best-selling artistes.

Among her hits were How Will I Know, Saving All My Love for You and I Will Always Love You. She won multiple Grammys including album and record of the year.

Her success carried her beyond music to movies like The Bodyguard.

But by the end of her career, drug use took its toll as her record sales plummeted and her voice became raspy and hoarse.

Ah started watching this and already I love it!!

Its about a fairly poor student who finds out she is the last remaining descendant of the Royal family..

PLot:

Lee-Sul (Kim Tae-Hee) is a woman who enters college later than other girls. Like her peers, they dream of one day becoming a princess, but for Lee-Sul she actually becomes a real life princess ...

Hae-Young (Song Seung-Heon) is a 31-year-old diplomat. He is the sole successor of the Daehan Jonghap Group (the largest conglomerate in Korea). Hae-Young is also handsome and graduated from an Ivy League school. Agreeing to his grandfather`s creed, Park Hae-Young decides to give up his rights to the company and all of his assets. This is all for a young woman named Lee-Sul.

Lee-Sul is a 25-year-old college student, majoring in Art History. She doesn't think about the secrets surrounding her birth or her stepsister who teased her behind her back. Lee-Sul keeps a shabby appearance and works several part time jobs on top of her college career. She also has a crush on her professor Nam Jung-Woo (Ryu Su-Yeong). One day, Lee-Sul becomes a princess overnight. In order to make her a princess, the President of the Daehan Jonghap Group offers all of his assets. 50,000,000 people stamp their approvals for her and royal families from all over the world sends congratulatory telegrams. Lee-Sul accepts the role of Princess, but she is now locked up in her palace and forced to study from dawn to late at night. Even worse, Park Hae-Young is her only instructor and he is snooty.

Yoon-Joo (Park Ye-Jin) is a 30-year-old woman, who works as the director of Hae-Young Museum. Her father is the secretary for the President of the Daehan Jong Group. Yoon-Joo hopes to marry Park Hae-Young one day to gain control over the company. Her plans come to a halt when the Princess suddenly appears. For the Princess, the President of the Daehan Jonghap Group returns all of his property to the community. Even Hae-Youngs begins to have favorable feelings for Lee-Sul. Yoon-Joo can't forgive Lee-Sul for what she has caused. Yoon-Jo then makes a plan and if it succeeds Korea will lose their imperial family.

Jung-Woo (Ryu Su-Yeong) is a professor, archeologist and holds a PH.D in the Arts. He is also popular among the female students. Jung-Woo grew up in a poor family. Even now with his high status, his financial situation isn't so good. Because of this, Jung-Woo hasn't proposed to his girlfriend Yoon-Joo. One day, something strange happens. Jung-Woo's student Lee-Sul (who always submits papers late, but works hard at excavation sites) turns out to be a princess. Lee-Sul then asks Jung-Woo to become an advisor for the "Redemption Committee of Imperial Family Cultural Assets".
